Fleet Charging Hub

With the Government confirming a ban on the sale of new Petrol and Diesel vehicles from 2030, it is increasingly important for businesses to be able to source charging for their fleet vehicles.

The challenge

With the Government confirming a ban on the sale of new Petrol and Diesel vehicles from 2030, it is increasingly important for businesses to be able to source charging for their fleet vehicles. The vast majority of businesses that use fleet vehicles tend to have either petrol or diesel models due to the large amount of mileage that needs to be covered. The Government change and the increasing introduction of Low Emission Zones in City Centres means that it is becomingly increasingly costly for business fleets.

Q-Park’s solution

Q-Park have created a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan which involves the creation of various mobility services where people can switch from one mode of transport to another, with convenient facilities designed for a low-carbon society. Central to the plethora of services is Electric Charging Hubs designed for fleet charging.

A great example of this strategy in action is the Q-Park Mobility Hub in their Park Lane car park in Central London. Within this facility is a large Fleet Vehicle Charging Hub operated by bp pulse which comprises of 20 Rapid charging points ranging from 50kwh to 150kwh. Businesses who have signed up with bp pulse simply park in one the dedicated parking spaces, plug their vehicle in using their membership card to activate the charging session. Located next to the Hub is a convenience area that has mobile phone charging ports as well as vending machines that dispense everything from snacks to hot drinks.

Q-Park have created a true ecosystem within the Mobility Hub with other tenants also using the Charging points for their fleet vehicles based inside the car park. These include DPD who charge their fully electric last mile logistics vehicles and Uber who charge their fully electric taxis whilst in between fares.

Access into the Park Lane Mobility Hub for Fleet drivers is facilitated by using Q-Park’s state of the art new PaSS (Parking as a Smart Service) Automatic Number Plate Recognition System. They would simply drive up to the entry barrier and this would raise for them automatically and the same would occur on exit. This allows for convenient and seamless access to the charging facilities without the risk of losing physical tickets.

Outcome

Q-Park have created a scheme which is transferable to every city in the UK in this ever-changing environment. Businesses with fleet vehicles can now access fast vehicle charging that allows them to operate their business with minimal disruption during this transitional phase, as well as also keeping their costs down by complying with Low Emission Zones that are appearing in more and more city centres.
